The Jean Craighead George Art Archive (JCGAA) collects, documents and preserves the visual artistic works, noteworthy personal ephemera and correspondence of Jean Craighead George (hereafter JCG). The Archive makes selections of these works available to researchers and the general public through its website, occasional exhibitions and access to archival materials.
Scope of Collection
The Jean Craighead George Art Archive’s primary concern is the artworks and illustrations of Jean Craighed George. In addition to this, the collection contains:
- Personal papers and related materials concerning the life of JCG
- Personal correspondence of and to JCG
- Original artwork and illustrations by JCG for books and periodicals
- Childhood ephemera and poetry of JCG
- Photographs relating to the life of JCG
- Select unpublished manuscripts of JCG
- Legal and tax documents pertaining to the estate of JCG
- Audio-visual material (including facsimiles) related to the personal life and professional appearances of JCG including teacher interviews, television appearances and documentation of family gatherings
- Speeches (including transcripts) made by JCG
- Miscellaneous writings for newspapers and magazines by JCG
- Miscellaneous press coverage of JCG and family
Access Policy
The Jean Craighead George Art Archive provides access to researchers and scholars with an academic interest in the history of children’s literature, the life of Jean Craighead George and members of her extended family, and nature art and illustration. Access to the collection in Baltimore, MD is by appointment only and granted on a case-by-case basis. Letters of reference and institutional affiliation are not required.
